The Tip of My Wish List: 2018 Debut Novels

If you're anything like me you've got a book wish list so long there is no way you will ever be able to read through it all. And, on top of that, it's never ending because you just can't stop adding more books to it! To try and organize myself I'm sharing 5 books from my wish list that I'm most excited to get to, usually with a common theme, on the last Friday of each month. I know a number of excellent bloggers who will be doing similar posts and I'll be sure to link to their posts as well so you can see all the goodies we're excited about and, hopefully, add a few new books to your own wish list. I'll also link the titles to Goodreads where you can read reviews and find the various ways to purchase a copy of the books if they sound like your style. I really hope you enjoy and let me know if you've read any of these or have others you would add to the list.

For this month's theme I've picked 5 debut novels coming out in 2018. I love discovering new authors and particularly love debuts as you get to see an author at the beginning of their talents. So often they've put in years of blood, sweat, and tears to create that first novel and it comes across in the writing.

In the spirit of Lilac Girls, the heartbreaking history of Korea is brought to life in this deeply moving and redemptive debut that follows two sisters separated by World War II.

Korea, 1943. Hana has lived her entire life under Japanese occupation. As a haenyeo, a female diver of the sea, she enjoys an independence that few other Koreans can still claim. Until the day Hana saves her younger sister from a Japanese soldier and is herself captured and transported to Manchuria. There she is forced to become a “comfort woman” in a Japanese military brothel. But haenyeo are women of power and strength. She will find her way home.

South Korea, 2011. Emi has spent more than sixty years trying to forget the sacrifice her sister made, but she must confront the past to discover peace. Seeing the healing of her children and her country, can Emi move beyond the legacy of war to find forgiveness?

Suspenseful, hopeful, and ultimately redemptive, White Chrysanthemum tells a story of two sisters whose love for each other is strong enough to triumph over the grim evils of war.

Seventeen-year-old Alice and her mother have spent most of Alice’s life on the road, always a step ahead of the uncanny bad luck biting at their heels. But when Alice’s grandmother, the reclusive author of a cult-classic book of pitch-dark fairy tales, dies alone on her estate, the Hazel Wood, Alice learns how bad her luck can really get: her mother is stolen away―by a figure who claims to come from the Hinterland, the cruel supernatural world where her grandmother's stories are set. Alice's only lead is the message her mother left behind: “Stay away from the Hazel Wood.”

Alice has long steered clear of her grandmother’s cultish fans. But now she has no choice but to ally with classmate Ellery Finch, a Hinterland superfan who may have his own reasons for wanting to help her. To retrieve her mother, Alice must venture first to the Hazel Wood, then into the world where her grandmother's tales began―and where she might find out how her own story went so wrong.

Everything Here is Beautiful

Two sisters: Miranda, the older, responsible one, always her younger sister's protector; Lucia, the vibrant, headstrong, unconventional one, whose impulses are huge and, often, life changing. When their mother dies and Lucia starts to hear voices, it's Miranda who must fight for the help her sister needs — even as Lucia refuses to be defined by any doctor's diagnosis.

Determined, impetuous, she plows ahead, marrying a big-hearted Israeli only to leave him, suddenly, to have a baby with a young Latino immigrant. She will move with her new family to Ecuador, but the bitter constant remains: she cannot escape her own mental illness. Lucia lives life on a grand scale, until inevitably, she crashes to earth. And then Miranda must decide, again, whether or not to step in — but this time, Lucia may not want to be saved. The bonds of sisterly devotion stretch across oceans, but what does it take to break them?

Told from alternating perspectives, Everything Here Is Beautiful is, at its core, a heart-wrenching family drama about relationships and tough choices — how much we're willing to sacrifice for the ones we love, and when it's time to let go and save ourselves.

The last person Alice Shipley expected to see since arriving in Tangier with her new husband was Lucy Mason. After the accident at Bennington, the two friends—once inseparable roommates—haven’t spoken in over a year. But there Lucy was, trying to make things right and return to their old rhythms. Perhaps Alice should be happy. She has not adjusted to life in Morocco, too afraid to venture out into the bustling medinas and oppressive heat. Lucy—always fearless and independent—helps Alice emerge from her flat and explore the country.

But soon a familiar feeling starts to overtake Alice—she feels controlled and stifled by Lucy at every turn. Then Alice’s husband, John, goes missing, and Alice starts to question everything around her: her relationship with her enigmatic friend, her decision to ever come to Tangier, and her very own state of mind.

Tangerine is a sharp dagger of a book—a debut so tightly wound, so replete with exotic imagery and charm, so full of precise details and extraordinary craftsmanship, it will leave you absolutely breathless.

The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock

This voyage is special. It will change everything…

One September evening in 1785, the merchant Jonah Hancock hears urgent knocking on his front door. One of his captains is waiting eagerly on the step. He has sold Jonah’s ship for what appears to be a mermaid.

As gossip spreads through the docks, coffee shops, parlours and brothels, everyone wants to see Mr Hancock’s marvel. Its arrival spins him out of his ordinary existence and through the doors of high society. At an opulent party, he makes the acquaintance of Angelica Neal, the most desirable woman he has ever laid eyes on… and a courtesan of great accomplishment. This meeting will steer both their lives onto a dangerous new course, on which they will learn that priceless things come at the greatest cost.

Where will their ambitions lead? And will they be able to escape the destructive power mermaids are said to possess?

In this spell-binding story of curiosity and obsession, Imogen Hermes Gowar has created an unforgettable jewel of a novel, filled to the brim with intelligence, heart and wit.

Review: The Trap by Melanie Raabe

Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
Pub. Date: July 5th, 2016
Pages: 352

Synopsis

In this twisted debut thriller, a reclusive author sets the perfect trap for her sister's murderer--but is he really the killer?

For 11 years, the bestselling author Linda Conrads has mystified fans by never setting foot outside her home. Haunted by the unsolved murder of her younger sister--who she discovered in a pool of blood--and the face of the man she saw fleeing the scene, Linda's hermit existence helps her cope with debilitating anxiety. But the sanctity of her oasis is shattered when she sees her sister's murderer on television. Hobbled by years of isolation, Linda resolves to use the plot of her next novel to lay an irresistible trap for the man. As the plan is set in motion and the past comes rushing back, Linda's memories--and her very sanity--are called into question. Is this man a heartless killer or merely a helpless victim?

What Did I Think About the Story?

I think this might be one of the coolest concepts for a thriller I've read in a while! An author who writes a novel that details her sister's murder in order to draw in the killer, all while she can't leave her home due to her anxiety, is brilliant. The fact that the sanity of the person telling the story is called into question from the very beginning makes it even more appealing. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love unreliable narrators and trying to piece together the truth from the information they are giving to the reader. Melanie Raabe does a wonderful job of stringing the reader along as Linda's trap is laid and the twists and turns of the aftermath fall into place.

From the very beginning it was easy to see that Linda spends the vast majority of her time in her own head, and that her head is full of a fantastical imagination and boundless fear. It also doesn't take long to figure out that Linda herself isn't even sure which of her memories and thoughts are real and which she's made up to fit what she wants to be true. I found Linda to be quite the complex character and, while I didn't particularly like her as a person, I loved her as a character I had to try and decipher. Most of the other characters fell a little flat to me (and none of them were particularly likeable characters) but Linda stood out as a unique and enjoyable character to read about.

I also really enjoyed the format of the story. Mixed in with Linda's current situation of trying to trick the person she emphatically believes killed  her sister into confessing and in such a way that she has evidence to present to everyone else (since she is, remember, not the most reliable of people), we get to read excerpts from the novel Linda wrote regarding her sister's murder. I particularly enjoyed these sections as they gave a better understanding of what happened that night - at least what Linda says happened - and that helped fill in some gaps in her current story. I've not read another novel that used this sort of technique, but I really wish more would as I found it really exciting!

I did have some issues with the story that kept The Trap from being a complete hit for me. The fact that none of the characters are particularly likeable didn't influence my enjoyability of the novel too much, but it did make me not care overmuch regarding the eventual outcome for them. The pace of the novel slows down quite a bit around the middle as Linda confronts the would-be killer as well, and I found myself just wanting that long evening of confrontation to get to an end and move on to the next step in the story. There's also a mild love story thrown in for some reason, and I really didn't think this added anything to the story overall.

All things considered I did enjoy The Trap and found that it scratched that psychological suspense itch I've had as of late.  It's definitely worth a read for the unique situations and formatting I discussed above and I think those that really enjoy mysteries and thrillers will find it worth a read. This being Melanie Raabe's debut, I'm excited to see what stories she comes up with next!

What Did I Think About the Cover?

Like the story it's kind of stark and dark and unadorned, which I appreciate since I like a cover that matches the story in some way.  However this isn't the sort of cover that I'd see walking by and have to stop to pick up to learn more. It's kind of plain and boring for my tastes.

My Rating: 3.0/5.0

Spotlight on True Stories at the Smoky View by Jill McCroskey Coupe

Publication Date: April 5th, 2016
Publisher: She Writes Press
Pages: 324

Genre: Contemporary Fiction/Debut Novel

After attending the funeral of her estranged friend Skip in Knoxville, Tennessee, Vrai (short for Vraiment), a forty-something art history librarian with sons of her own, rescues ten-year-old Jonathan, who has been abandoned with no shoes in the funeral home parking lot. The Blizzard of 1993 strands this unlikely duo at the Smoky View Motel, where, motivated in part by the unsolved murders of Jonathan’s parents, they begin to uncover the truth about Skip’s death. With elements of mystery and intrigue, True Stories at the Smoky View is primarily a novel about relationships: the love Vrai feels for her husband and sons, all of whom have left home; her friendship with Skip, which she begins to see in a new light; and her deepening bond with Jonathan. For Vrai and Jonathan, this is a story of mutual rescue―one that results in new lives for them both.

Advanced Praise

True Stories at the Smoky View is a riveting literary mystery you won’t soon forget. Jill McCroskey Coupe handles this complex tale of troubled romance, broken families, redeeming friendship, and inexplicable evil with intelligence, grace, and grit. This exhilarating debut novel brims with honesty, charm, heart, and good humor.”
John Dufresne, author of No Regrets, Coyote

“Intrigue abounds in True Stories at the Smoky View, but this wonderful first novel is above all testament to Eudora Welty’s observation that “all serious daring starts from within.” With an abundance of wit and accuracy of feeling, Jill Coupe beautifully charts both the complexities of loyalty and the internal growth of Vrai Lynde, her central character, and she does so in clear, precise prose.”
Jane Brox, author of Brilliant: The Evolution of Artificial Light

“This is a thoroughly absorbing book that I found difficult to put down. The personalities Coupe conjured stayed with me long after I finished reading. The writing is beautiful: spare and funny. A most enjoyable read.”
Maureen Beck, former Director of Library Services, Stevenson University

Guest Post by Mira Day, Author of Playing House

Hi everyone! My name is Mira Day and my debut novel, Playing House released on Sept. 1st. Colleen has been amazing enough to let me chat with you guys about it a little today. J

Playing House is about a girl named Hannah Bishop. She’s a hard-working, independent woman who feels like she’s just spinning her wheels. She needs something to push her to follow her dreams of becoming a chef. She finds out that her boyfriend of two years is cheating on her and she finds that this small act has turned her whole world upside down. Realizing she may be in danger, she discovers the safety of Caleb Matthews, a successful lawyer with secrets of his own.

Passion is the underlying theme for this story. I love the idea that we all have a passion that drives us, even if you haven’t found it. What’s so awesome about passion, is that you don’t have to be good at it. You just have to love it. I have a passion for music. Music is tied into everything I do…but I can’t sing nor play any instrument. Doesn’t stop me from loving it.

Hannah has a passion for food but has never taken the steps to follow that passion. She allows fear to hold herself back and I think it’s sad when people do that.

If I’ve learned anything through the publishing Playing House, it’s this. No matter what, at one point in your life, you must do something to put yourself out there. Take that passion of yours and do one thing with it. Paint a picture and hang it proudly in your home. Jump on stage and do karaoke (have a beer or two before if need be). Just do something that makes you a little vulnerable. Some people will love what you do, others don’t. But that’s okay. Do it for you so that at the end, you’ll never ask “what if”. I’ve been very lucky in my life that I’ve had a few of these opportunities. The feeling you get when you walk away from those experiences are life changing. Make sure you have a good support group and you’ll never regret it. Trust me.

Much Love!

TLC Book Tours: Review of Come Away With Me by Karma Brown + Giveaway!!

Publisher: Mira
Publication Date: August 25th, 2015
Pages: 368

Synopsis

A heartbreaking and emotional story of love and loss, COME AWAY WITH ME is one woman’s discovery that life is still worth living, even if it’s not the life you planned.

One minute, Tegan Lawson has everything she could hope for: an adoring husband, Gabe, and a baby on the way. The next, a patch of black ice causes a devastating accident that will change her life in ways she never could have imagined.

Tegan is consumed by grief—not to mention anger toward Gabe, who was driving on the night of the crash. But just when she thinks she’s hit rock bottom, Gabe reminds her of their Jar of Spontaneity, a collection of their dream destinations and experiences, and so begins an adventure of a lifetime.

From the bustling markets of Thailand to the flavors of Italy to the ocean waves in Hawaii, Tegan and Gabe embark on a journey to escape the tragedy and search for forgiveness. But they soon learn that grief follows you no matter how far away you run, and that acceptance comes when you least expect it. Heartbreaking, hopeful and utterly transporting, COME AWAY WITH ME is an unforgettable debut and a luminous celebration of the strength of the human spirit.

What Did I Think About the Story?

Please excuse me while I gush a little bit (well,  maybe a lot!) about Come Away With Me by Karma Brown. It has been quite a while since a book made me actually, physically cry...like big, fat, hiccup-inducing tears...but that is exactly what happened on and off as I read this story. The raw emotions these characters are experiencing are written so vividly I at times felt like I could feel their pain, anger, anxiety and hollowing sadness along with them. While this did bring about some strange looks from my husband and dogs I am so happy to have experienced these feelings along with Tegan. This is a story that will consume you, and in my opinion that makes one hell of a great read.

After the accident Tegan can't seem to get out of her own head or see past her grief, and is so filled with an emptiness and livid anger that she can't help but want to hide away from the world and lash out at anyone who even attempts to get her to think about a time when she can start healing and moving on. While I have thankfully never experienced a tragedy like Tegan's, my son was born two  months early and had to spend the first month of his life in the hospital. He is now a healthy, happy ten year old, but I will never forget going home from the hospital without  him and the abject emptiness I felt the first time I walked through the door without him in my arms. Ms. Brown nails describing this feeling and made me instantly sympathize with Tegan and the myriad physical and emotional symptoms that come along with an accident like she experiences.

As the story progresses the reader not only gets to go along with Tegan and Gabe as they travel to three dream locations but, disbursed throughout, are chapters that go back into Tegan and Gabe's life so we get to see how their love developed and the life they had been living up until the horrible accident.  These chapters are filled with laughter and love, and if you haven't fallen a little in love with Gabe by the end I would be shocked. He is such a kind, patient person with Tegan and his careful treatment of her as they travel to Thailand, Italy and Hawaii was beyond touching. Oh, and be prepared to add these three locations to your bucket list, if you haven't already, because Karma Brown's ability to transport the reader made me feel like I was riding an elephant, taking a cooking class filled with ripe tomatoes and garlic and learning how to surf right along with Tegan and Gabe. She hits all the senses with a bang and I am now ready to put my backpack on and take off!

There is a twist towards the end of the novel that actually made my heart start beating faster. I honestly didn't see it coming and it really hit me harder than I would have expected given the fact that these things weren't really happening. Regardless, I think it was perfectly done as it drives the story in a direction that will finally come to a conclusion with a sense of satisfaction and hopefulness. After all the tears I was very happy to come to this sort of conclusion!

I can't recommend Come Away With Me enough, to anyone who wants to travel along on a sometimes sad yet always fascinating adventure with some unforgettable characters. The fact that this is Karma Brown's debut novel is astounding to me, and I can tell you that she has found a forever-fan in this reader.

What Did I Think About the Cover?

Beautiful! If you just take it at surface value, it is eye-catching, colorful and makes you think of vacation and travel, which plays a huge part in the story. Looking a little further at what could be the symbolism of the cover, we have Tegan, currently in the bright, calm waters about to be overtaken by the much darker, turbulent waves. Tegan battles with her emotions throughout the story so this could represent that perfectly. However you decide to look at it, I think it's as stunning as the story.
